Electronic and Bio Arts

Contents

The first Thursday of each month is 'Electronic and Bio Arts Night'. We are going to be bringing in some great artists working with fascinating technologies to give talks and demos. Their innovative use of technologies will be of great interest to the whole group and not just solely to artists. The "Electronic and Bio Arts Night" is co-ordinated by Anna Dumitriu, if you are interested in showing your work please get in touch.

The events all take place as usual at The Skiff http://theskiff.org/ and normally the talks start at 8 :00pm ('drop in' BuildBrighton starts at 7pm so you can come to both bits).

Andrea Polli

Lighthouse's Monthly Talks happen on the first Thursday of each month, and feature some of the most exciting and influential names in digital art and moving image. Following the inaugural Monthly Talk by semiconductor in July, we will be welcoming American artist Andrea Polli to Lighthouse in August. She will present her inspirational meteorological artwork.

Particle Falls / Andrea Polli & Chuck Varga

Andrea Polli is a digital media artist living in New Mexico. In her work, global weather and air pollution data are transformed into mesmerising video and sound installations. Many of Polli's works rely on a process called "sonification", which translates data into sound. Her work has been exhibited extensively around the world, including at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Chicago, the Whitney Museum of American Art, Art Center Nabi in Korea, Centre pour l'image Contemporaine in Geneva, Site Gallery in Sheffield, the Center for Contemporary Art in Santa Fe, Eyebeam in New York NY, and the ICA in London, as well as at festivals such as transmediale and SIGGRAPH.

In August 2010, Polli and her partner Chuck Varga, founding member of the shock-rock group, GWAR, are artists-in--residence at Blast Theory's studios in Portslade. This talk will welcome them both to Brighton, and give audiences an opportunity to engage with their unique practice.

Following the talk, Polli will be giving a demonstration of some of the technology she works with members of the BuildBrighton group.

As well as being a practising artist, Polli is currently an Associate Professor in Fine Arts and Engineering at The University of New Mexico and Mesa Del Sol Endowed Chair of Digital Media at the University. She served as the founding Director of the Interdisciplinary Film and Digital Media Program and as Director of ARTS Lab at the University from 2009-2010. From 2005-2008 she served as the Director of the Integrated Media Arts Masters of Fine Arts Program at Hunter College/CUNY.

3rd June 2010 - Alvaro Collar "Videocartography / VAM project"

Abstract -

One of the main attributes of the social web is that allows the user to take part in the contents creation and distribution. If one the one hand Youtube has been of utter relevance in our way to think about the audiovisual media, Google Maps has done the same thing in relation to our processes of reference and creation of online maps.

It is from the integration between both new proposals where arises another approach to represent cities: travelling through interactive maps in which we gain access to videos created by the own citizens. And even though this videos provide the traditional map aim, that of representing the territory, it also add a extra-dimension to the cartographical one encouraging new dialogues not only with the city itself but with other texts and users.

6th May 2010 - Tobie Kerridge "Media Mediators - Exploring the movement of digital objects in the Home"

Abstract -

Electronic objects are increasingly used in our daily routines at home. Together, these linked appliances comprise a digital ecology, interdependent and constantly communicating, sending and receiving data between themselves and a range of services and products that lie beyond the home. This project explores how the movement of these objects can be customised by individual users to create a language of interaction that is personal and relevant. Tobie worked with Andy Law on the prototypes and Bas Raijmakers with the video-blog for the project.

Biography -

Tobie Kerridge is a PhD candidate in design at Goldsmiths, London. His recent practice has explored the entanglement of speculative design and public engagement through projects including Biojewellery and Material Beliefs. Previously Tobie has contributed to research supported by the EPSRC, France Telecom, Intel and Philips Design. He is a visiting lecturer at Goldsmiths, the Royal College of Art and Edinburgh College of Art.

4th February 2010 - Luciana Haill "Neurofeedback Art using an Interactive Brainwave Visualisation Analyser (IBVA) System"

Abstract -

IBVA is a Brain Computer Interface for monitoring brainwaves. IBVA reveals inner state changes in human brainwaves (EEG) in realtime giving 3D interactive control. IBVA stands for "Interactive B rainwave Visual Analyser. It is 'an electronic mirror for the mind' brought to you by IBVA UK - specialist supplier for the world's smallest, wireless, portable brainwave monitor. An essential tool giving you freedom to research, record and analyse brainwaves (EEG) - for creative Neurofeedback.

Biography -

Luciana Haill works with Neurotechnologies to sample human brains’ electrical oscillations (EEG) emitted during Altered States of Consciousness (ASC). Her presentations of this information as interactive telematic art and sensory environments, often in conjunction with changes in thinking, emotions, and behaviors invoke desired physiological changes.

Luciana uses portable BCIs (Brain Computer Interfaces) to provide moment-to-moment information to an individual on the state of their physiological functioning (with a focus on the central nervous system and the brain.) This creative Neurofeedback process she has investigated over 15 years also provides more files for her ‘EEG depository’ – a collection of unique brainwave data samples recorded from many different subjects in diverse locations. http://www.ibva.co.uk
